Climbing Grades Explained
Last Updated: September 2026
Grades describe difficulty, not your worth. U.S. roped routes usually use Yosemite Decimal (5.5, 5.6, 5.7…). Boulders use V-scale (V0, V1, V2…). Gym grades and outdoor grades are not a clean conversion.
Quick Facts
- First roped day: often 5.5–5.7 in a gym, whatever the guide picks outside
- First boulder day: V0–V1
- “Plus” and color systems vary by gym
- Harder is not the goal on day one
Roped (5.x)
5.5–5.7 is where most first-timers live. 5.10 is a different sport than the movie in your head.
Boulders (V)
V0 is the start. V3 in a gym is not a beginner default.
Beginner Mistakes
- Jumping to the grade your friend sends
- Treating a gym 5.10 as an outdoor plan
FAQ
**What grade should I start on?** The easiest wall they point you at. Then one step up.
**Why does my gym grade feel easier than outside?** Gym holds are set for you. Outdoor holds are not. The same number outside often feels harder. That is normal, not a conspiracy.
