Is Stand-Up Paddleboarding Hard?
Reviewed by the Seeking Adrenaline team · Updated Oct 29, 2026

- Short answer: on calm, flat water, stand-up paddleboarding is one of the easier water sports to start. Wind, waves and current are what make it hard. Avila Beach Paddlesports: afternoons can get windy and mornings are best.
- Price: at the shops we list, a paddleboard rental costs about $20 to $30 an hour or $50 to $90 a day. Prices checked Oct 2026.
- Trip length: rentals run by the hour or the day. A day rental often means about 8 hours or until sunset.
- Best season: it depends on the shop and the weather. Check with the operator for your dates.
- Who it's for: anyone who can swim and is comfortable getting wet. Many shops require every guest to swim independently, and some allow kids 7 and up with an adult in calm conditions.
What it's like to try SUP for the first time
You start on your knees in the middle of the board, paddling a few strokes to get moving. When the board feels steady, you stand up one foot at a time, with your feet about hip-width apart and your eyes on the horizon rather than your toes. The first minute is the wobbliest. Once you're moving, the board gets more stable, and paddling starts to feel natural.
Most of the difficulty comes from the water, not the board. On a still lake or a sheltered bay, many first-timers stand up within their first session. On a windy afternoon, the same board can feel much harder to steer, and paddling back upwind takes real effort.

What makes SUP harder (and easier)
- Wind. It's the biggest factor. A light breeze is fine, but strong wind can push you away from where you started. Paddle into the wind first so the trip back is easier.
- Waves and boat wakes. Choppy water makes balance harder. Sheltered bays, coves and small lakes are easier than open ocean.
- Board size. Wider, longer boards are more stable. If you're nervous, ask the shop for its most stable board.
- Current. On a river, check which way the water flows before you set out, and plan your return.
- Cold water. Falling in is part of learning. In cold water, a wetsuit helps, and some shops rent them.
Who it's right for
SUP suits swimmers who want a calm, low-impact way to get on the water. It's a good first water sport for teens and adults, and families can start together on a large group board. If you want to know more first, read Can anyone go stand-up paddleboarding? and First-time SUP questions.
Not the right fit if...
You can't swim, or you'd hate falling into the water. You may also prefer a kayak or canoe, where you sit down and balance matters less; see Is canoeing hard?. If you want speed rather than calm, an eFoil is a very different ride; see Is eFoiling hard? and eFoil vs wing foil vs SUP.
FAQ
Can a beginner stand up on a paddleboard the first time?
On calm water, many people can. Start on your knees, get moving, then stand one foot at a time with your eyes up. Wind and waves make it harder.
Is SUP harder than kayaking?
It takes more balance at the start, because you're standing. A kayak is more forgiving on a windy day. On calm water, both are beginner-friendly.
Do I need to know how to swim to paddleboard?
Yes, at most rental shops. Many require every guest to swim independently, and many rent every board with a life jacket and a leash.
What's the best time of day to paddleboard?
Usually the morning, when the wind is lighter.
How much does it cost to rent a paddleboard?
About $20 to $30 an hour at the shops we list, or $50 to $90 a day. Prices checked Oct 2026.
