What a first paddle feels like

On calm water, kayaking is easy to start. You sit low, hold a double-bladed paddle and pull one side, then the other. The first few minutes can feel wobbly as you find your balance, and then the boat starts to go where you point it. On a river, the current does some of the work. On a bay or open water, wind and waves become part of the day.

Each session lasts about 3 hours 45 minutes. The morning session is recommended for young kids aged 8 and up, and the afternoon session for adults and children 12 and up. The price includes a guide, a two-person kayak, a life vest, a spray skirt, neoprene mitts, waterproof boots, a dry bag and a light snack.

OAC Tours (Cottonwood, AZ)

The guided Verde River kayak tour lasts about 2 hours, covering about 3.5 miles. Self-guided trips last 2 to 4 hours and include the shuttle and equipment. Both are for ages 5 and up. Check in 45 minutes before launch and allow about 3 hours in all. The guide's tip isn't included.

Adrift Tahoe (Kings Beach, CA)

Kayak rentals go by the hour or the day, with single, double and pedal-drive kayaks. A parent or guardian must sign the release for anyone under 18.

Buffalo Outdoor Center (Ponca, AR)

Day floats on the Buffalo include Steel Creek to Kyle's Landing (8 miles, 4 to 6 hours) and Pruitt to Hasty (6.8 miles, 4 to 5 hours). The launch site depends on the water level, so the outfitter confirms it each morning (buffaloriver.com). Check its rental and shuttle rates page for prices.

Aqua Adventures (San Diego, CA)

Rentals launch from the company's dock on Mission Bay and include a paddle, life jacket and seat. Renters must be 18 or older, passengers must be at least 5, and children 12 and under must wear a life jacket at all times. Reservations are recommended but walk-ups are welcome.

Montgomery Whitewater (Montgomery, AL)

This park has flatwater and whitewater kayaking. Check with the operator for its season.

Rent if you're comfortable on calm water, want to set your own pace and are paddling somewhere sheltered. Choose a tour if it's your first time, you're on open water or a river, or you want someone else to plan the route and handle the shuttle. What to wear

Dress for getting wet. On a river trip you'll often get wet from the waist down, and some outfitters don't allow flip-flops, slides, backless shoes or bare feet, so wear shoes that strap on. On cold water, a tour that supplies gear like waterproof boots, neoprene mitts and a spray skirt helps.

Who it's right for
