What mountain biking is like

On the trail, you'll shift gears for climbs, stand up on descents and pick lines around rocks and roots. Beginner trails are wide and smooth; harder ones get steeper and rockier. E-bikes add pedal assist, which makes climbs easier and lets more people enjoy longer rides. In Sedona, eBike Sedona welcomes all fitness levels and includes training with every ride.

Prices vary by bike, length and guide. What's included matters as much as the price:

• Absolute Bikes (Sedona, AZ): every rental includes a helmet, pump, repair kit, spare tube, choice of pedals and sizing.
• eBike Sedona (Sedona, AZ): every rental includes a helmet, lock, trail map and training, and every tour includes all the gear you need. A $11 day-use fee at Crescent Moon Ranch isn't included on self-guided tours. Prices checked Oct 2026.
• Trail Lovers (Sedona, AZ): two, three and five-hour tours come with ice-chilled water, electrolytes and sparkling water.

• E-bikes: eBike Sedona's rentals are for ages 12 and up.

• Families: Cog Wild in Bend, Oregon, runs a junior program with after-school riding and summer camps.

What to wear and bring

At Teton Mountain Bike Tours, wear comfortable clothes for the season, a wind or rain shell and sneakers. eBike Sedona asks self-guided riders to bring their own backpack, water and snacks. A helmet comes with rentals at Absolute Bikes and eBike Sedona. Padded shorts and gloves make longer rides more comfortable.

Your first ride

Mountain biking takes practice on technical trails, but beginner routes are easy to start on. A guide helps you find trails that match your ability: Cog Wild offers guides for solo riders, small groups and large private groups. Half-day tours at Teton Mountain Bike Tours are 4 hours in Grand Teton National Park and the Jackson Hole area, and full days run 6 to 8 hours.

Guided ride, bike park or rental?

• Guided ride: a guide picks trails for your level and teaches skills along the way.
• Rental: you choose your route, with a trail map; good if you've ridden before.
• Bike park: lifts carry you up, and you ride graded downhill trails.
• E-bike vs regular bike: e-bikes make climbs easier; regular bikes are lighter and handle more naturally on steep descents.
