Via Ferrata vs Zipline

If a sentence still works after you swap in “zipline,” it does not describe via ferrata.

**Via ferrata:** you walk a protected iron path on the rock, clipped to a steel cable with dual lanyards, usually with a guide. **Zipline:** you hang in a harness and slide along a cable between platforms. Both use cables. Only one is an iron path you climb and walk.

Want the hang-and-slide product? See the Zipline Resource Center.

Quick Facts

  • Via ferrata: walk / step the rock + iron; clip as you go
  • Zipline: sit or hang and ride the cable
  • Kit and brief differ — do not mix the muscle memory
  • Filter: Via ferrata (US commercial) vs Zip-line / canopy
  • Some resorts sell both as separate products

Side-by-Side

| | Via ferrata | Zipline | |---|---|---| | Motion | Walk and climb the path | Slide the cable | | Protection idea | Dual lanyards on a fixed line | Trolley / continuous belay systems vary | | Effort | Legs, balance, clipping | Mostly hang and brake as briefed | | Time shape | Route + hike, often hours | Tour with multiple short rides |

FAQ

**Can I do both the same day?** Sometimes at multi-activity operators. Treat them as separate briefs. Do not reuse zip habits on iron.

**Which is better for kids?** Operator age and height rules decide — not a national myth. See Via Ferrata With Kids.
