Indoor Skydiving vs Tandem Skydiving

Last Updated: September 2026

Indoor skydiving is a wind tunnel on the ground. Tandem skydiving is a jump from an aircraft. They share a body position. They do not share a plane, a parachute landing, or the same age rules.

Quick Facts

  • Indoor: building, short repeatable flights, often $60–$120 for a first package, usually year-round
  • Tandem: aircraft, 30–60 seconds of freefall then canopy, typically $250–$350, weather can cancel
  • Indoor age: often much younger than 18
  • Tandem age at most U.S. dropzones: 18
  • Tunnel time does not replace a tandem and is not required before one

Indoor Skydiving vs Tandem Skydiving

| Feature | Indoor Skydiving | Tandem Skydiving | |---|---|---| | Aircraft required | No | Yes | | Real freefall | Simulated | Yes | | Parachute ride | No | Yes | | Weather dependent | Rarely | Yes | | Typical cost | Lower | Higher | | Common minimum age | Often younger | Usually 18 | | Flight duration | Multiple short flights | One full skydive |

Indoor

  • No aircraft
  • Wind tunnel
  • Lower cost and time on site
  • Family-friendly ages at many tunnels
  • Good for body-position practice

Tandem

  • Real aircraft
  • Real freefall
  • Parachute flight and landing
  • Outdoor view
  • What most people mean by “I want to skydive”

Which One Is Better?

Neither. They’re different experiences.

If your goal is to experience freefall body position in a controlled environment, indoor skydiving is an excellent choice.

If your goal is to jump from an aircraft and experience a real skydive, choose tandem skydiving.

Beginner Mistakes

  • Calling a tunnel session “my skydive”
  • Expecting tunnel time to count toward a license the way a real jump does
  • Booking tandem for a 16-year-old because indoor allowed it

FAQ

**Is indoor the same as skydiving?** No. It simulates freefall body position. There is no aircraft exit and no parachute landing.

**Which is cheaper?** Indoor, for a first session.

**Which is scarier?** Most people rate the plane door higher. Indoor still surprises first-timers.
