What to Wear

Dress for cold and wet snow, not a city sidewalk.

**Base:** moisture-wicking top and bottom. Skip cotton. **Mid:** fleece or light puffy you can unzip. **Shell:** waterproof jacket and pants. **Feet:** wool or ski socks — one pair. Bring the socks you will wear to rental fitting. **Hands / head:** gloves or mittens, helmet (rental or own), neck gaiter optional.

Goggles belong in the rent/bring decision — see What to Rent vs Bring.

Quick Facts

  • Layers beat one giant coat
  • Waterproof shell matters
  • Boots come with the rental
  • Jeans get wet and cold — leave them

FAQ

**Can I wear a regular winter coat?** If it is warm and snow sheds off it, maybe. A ski shell is better when you sit and fall.

**Do skis and snowboards dress differently?** Same layers. Snowboarders sit more — butt stays wetter without good pants.
