A Moab UTV ride isn't a dirt-road cruise. Much of it happens on slickrock, the bare sandstone that rises in fins and domes around town. Moab Tour Company's Hell's Revenge tour is "a 3 to 4 hour guided ride across Moab's iconic slickrock." Who can drive

Driver ages vary a lot:

• Moab Tour Company: UTV tour drivers 16 or older with a valid driver's license. UTV renters must be 21 or older.
• Xtreme 4x4 Tours (U-Drive) and Moab Grand Tours: 18 or older with a valid license.
• Epic 4x4 Adventures: its tours carry an "Adults 21+ Only" badge.
• Moab Side X Side Adventures (rentals): the primary renter must be 25 or older with a valid license.

The Utah OHV course

Per Moab Side X Side Adventures, Utah requires drivers 18 and older to complete the free Utah Off-Highway Vehicle Education Course before riding on public lands. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes online, and you show the certificate at check-in. AreaBFE asks everyone entering its property to complete the course; its off-road park is temporarily closed (areabfe.com). Ask your operator whether you need it.

Heat, sun and timing

Summers are hot, and Moab Grand Tours recommends morning or late-afternoon tours. Moab Tourism Center warns summer temperatures can exceed 100 degrees and suggests April to May or September to October (moabtourismcenter.com).
