What to Wear on a UTV Tour

Last Updated: September 2026

Wear clothes you can get dirty and shoes that will not come off on a brake pedal. Helmets and often eye protection come from the operator. You dress for dust, sun, and a temperature swing.

Quick Facts

  • Closed-toe shoes required almost everywhere
  • Long sleeves beat bare arms in dust
  • Gaiter or buff for the face
  • Sunglasses that stay on
  • Check that site for helmet rules

Hot Weather / Desert

  • Light long sleeves
  • Long pants if the operator wants them (many do)
  • Sunscreen on skin the gaiter will not cover
  • Extra water

Desert air at 8am is not desert air at 1pm. Layers.

Cold Weather / Mountains

  • Real jacket, not a souvenir hoodie
  • Gloves
  • Closed boots
  • Something for the ears under the helmet if they allow it

Footwear

Recommended: sneakers or light hiking shoes with a heel you can feel on the pedal. Avoid: flip-flops, slides, heels, loose boots.

Can I Wear Sandals or Crocs?

Typically no. Pedals and rocks do not mix with open shoes. If the official website does not list them as allowed, bring sneakers.

Can I Wear Shorts?

Often yes on desert tours, including Moab, if the operator allows it. Dust and brush will chew up bare legs. Long pants are the more comfortable call on rocky or wooded trails. Check that site — some yards want long pants regardless of heat.

Gloves

Optional on easy scenic tours. Useful on longer or rockier days. Cheap work gloves beat blistered hands.

What Not to Wear

  • Flip-flops
  • Dresses
  • Dangling jewelry
  • Loose scarves
  • White clothes you care about
  • A hat that will fly off (use a buff)

FAQ

**Do I need boots?** Sneakers are enough on most guided tours. Boots help on rocky walk-arounds.

**Will they give me a jacket?** Usually no.
