Tandem Paragliding and Motion Sickness

Last Updated: September 2026

Fear of heights and motion sickness are related for some people and separate for others. A calm tandem often feels like floating in a seat, not like a roller coaster — unless you book an acrobatic package. Tell the pilot what you want before launch.

Quick Facts

  • Scenic / smooth flights exist; acro / wingover packages are optional at some schools
  • Looking at the horizon helps some people more than looking straight down
  • Eat light; skip heavy alcohol before the flight
  • Tell the pilot early if you get car-sick or boat-sick
  • You can usually keep your eyes on the view without hanging your head over the side

What If I’m Afraid of Heights?

Heights fear is common and separate from motion sickness. On a calm tandem you are sitting in a harness under a wing — not hanging off a cliff edge with your hands. Practical tips:

  • Tell the pilot before launch that heights make you nervous
  • Look at the horizon or distant terrain more than straight down
  • Ask for a smooth scenic flight, not acro
  • Focus on the run / sit instructions during launch; the “busy” part is short
  • You can usually look at the view when you are ready — nobody forces a stare at the ground

Many first-timers are surprised that the harness feels secure and the motion is steady in calm air. For the full sensory picture, see What Does Tandem Paragliding Feel Like?.

Motion Sensitivity

Thermals and turns can feel like a slow elevator or a gentle bank. If you want the calmest available flight, ask for scenic and decline acro. Do not surprise the pilot after takeoff.

What Helps

  • Sleep and hydrate
  • Light snack if you get shaky when hungry
  • Eyes on the horizon during turns
  • Breathing steadily on launch instead of holding your breath

What Does Not Help

  • Spinning yourself around to film every direction if you already feel queasy
  • Booking the most aggressive video flight package “to get over it”

FAQ

**Will I throw up?** Most passengers do not. If you are prone to motion sickness, tell the pilot and keep the flight smooth.

**Is it worse than a chairlift?** Different. Many people find a calm paraglider gentler than they expected; gusty days feel more active.
