What Is Tandem Hang Gliding?

Last Updated: September 2026

**Tandem hang gliding** means you and a rated instructor share one hang glider. The instructor flies. You are attached in a harness. You do not solo the wing on flight one.

Quick Facts

  • You fly as a passenger on a tandem hang glider — not alone
  • The instructor handles control of the rigid wing
  • You are clipped into a harness (and usually a backup connection the school briefs)
  • Controls you touch: usually none — follow run / body-position calls
  • Takeoff: short run on a hill or a tow launch — confirm which that school uses
  • Landing: instructor manages the approach; you follow feet / stand calls

Do I Fly?

No — not as the pilot. The instructor flies the glider. Your job is to listen, run when told, keep your body where they put you, and enjoy the view.

Am I Attached?

Yes. Schools harness and connect you before launch. The brief covers how you are secured. Ask if anything feels unclear on the ground — not mid-run.

What Controls Do I Touch?

On a standard scenic tandem, you usually do **not** fly the control bar. Some schools let you put hands near the bar later for a feel; that is optional and instructor-led. Do not grab bars, cables, or the instructor unless they ask.

How Does Takeoff Work?

Two common setups:

  • **Hill / slope launch:** you and the instructor run until the wing flies and your feet leave the ground
  • **Tow launch:** a tow system pulls the glider into the air from flatter ground

Confirm launch type on the operator’s official site. Closed-toe shoes you can run in matter either way — see What to Wear Hang Gliding.

Hang Gliding vs Paragliding (One Line)

Hang gliding uses a **rigid wing** on a frame. Paragliding uses a **fabric wing**. Different ticket. Full page: Hang Gliding vs Paragliding.

What the Day Looks Like (Short)

Check-in, harness, brief, wait for a launch window, takeoff, flight, landing. Airtime is only part of the outing — see What to Expect on Your First Hang Gliding Flight and How Long Does a Hang Gliding Flight Take?.

FAQ

**Is this a lesson where I solo?** No. First-timers book a tandem passenger flight.

**Will I hang under the wing or sit?** Hang gliding is typically a prone or harnessed hang under a rigid wing — not the seated paraglider harness. The school shows you the position in the brief.

**Is a paramotor the same thing?** No. A paramotor has an engine.
