Best for First-Time Rafters

Appalachia and the mid-Atlantic Lots of half-day commercial runs and busy summer weekends. Good first-trip density. Still read class — famous names are not all Class II.

Best for Long Seasons

Southeast Longer season than the North. Summer storms and dam schedules still move trips.

Best for Bigger Rapids

Mountain West Snowmelt calendar. June is not August. Age and class can change with flow. Do not treat “Colorado” as one river.

Best for Multi-Day Trips

Southwest canyon country Day trips and multi-day wilderness live next to each other. Do not book the expedition because the half-day was sold out.

Pacific Northwest

Shorter peak, cold water, rain. Dress for the river. Fine first trips exist; the water is still cold.

• Treating “whitewater capital” as a class rating
